The Cherry Orchard

was written by Anton Chekov (1903).  The production for which this score was written was mounted in the spring of 2004 by Lafayette College (Easton, PA, USA) and directed by Michael O'Neill and marked the 100-year anniversary of the original Moscow Art Theatre production.

The modern score (in the early 1900's sense of the word) plays with rhythm and dissonance, but never seeks to make a statement that doesn't support the arc of the play.

A few pieces enter the world of early klezmer, and Johannes Brahm's Hungarian Dance #5 is heard at the top of Act III.

This score was written with cues that correspond to the David Mamet 1987 adaptation.

Orchestration:

2 Bb Clarinets

1 Bb Trumpet

1 Mandolin

1 Guitar

1 String Bass

N.B. The Trumpet and Mandolin players are asked to play 1 short piece on acoustic guitar [#2]. The Clarinet 1 player is asked to double on tambourine for part of two pieces [#7 & #15].
